Literacy

Picture
Reading has always given me immense pleasure and joy. Sadly, there are many people for whom reading and writing has been a struggle, and I want to help as many people as I can to overcome any difficulties they've had with literacy so that they can get the same pleasure as I do from books.

I am proud to have contributed 2 novels to the Open Door Series which, among many others, includes Patricia Scanlan, Marian Keyes, Cathy Kelly, Roddy Doyle, Dermot Bolger and Deirdre Purcell. These short novels are written for adults who have had problems with reading in the past, or who have come to reading late in life. They are also widely read by students of English. In addition to the Open Door series, I've also contributed a novel to the Quick Reads series in the UK.

I was also involved in 2011 with the RTE series, a story with me in it, in which I worked with a mum who'd struggled with her reading and writing in the past to help her produce a story of her own. Catherine worked fantastically hard and I was really proud the day she stood up and read her own story!

Follow Me - Quick Reads 2011

This is the third short novel I’ve written as part of my commitment to bringing reading as pleasure to as many peoople as possible! Like the Open Door series, Quick Reads is a series of short novels designed for adults who find reading long novels daunting. They’re bite-sized reads, fast-paced and fun.

Pippa Jones is twenty-something and single. She likes chips, country music and her cat. She also loves her career as number one sales rep for a computer firm. The only thing she hasn’t got time for is men. Broken-hearted last time round, Pippa is sticking to girlfriends – and winning a dream trip to New York.

However, life isn’t that simple. A rival firm is stealing her clients and a tall, fair stranger is following her everywhere. He’s in the bar, at dinner, even at her meetings. Is he a stalker?

Whoever he is, he’s about to turn Pippa’s world upside-down

Maggie's Story (Open Door Series Adult Literacy Novel)

The Open Door Series is a collection of books for people who have had reading difficulties or who have come to reading later in life. They are also used by non-native English speakers to improve their English. They are short novellas and deal with a whole range of themes.

Maggie is  forty-three years old and looking for romance. She loves her husband, Dan, but his idea of romance is a couple of drinks at the local and an early night at home.

Her children think she’s too old to care. And she’s beginning to wonder if life has passed her by.

But a chance meeting changes all that and now Maggie faces tough decisions. Can she put the spark back into her marriage or would she be better off calling it a day. And who is more important? Her husband? Her children? Or herself?

I received a lovely, lovely letter from a reader who told me that Maggie’s Story was the first novel he’d ever read. I’m really proud of that!

Three's A Crowd (Open Door Series Adult Literacy Novels)

The Open Door Series is a collection of books for people who have had reading difficulties or who have come to reading later in life. They are also used by non-native English speakers to improve their English. They are short novellas and deal with a whole range of themes.

This is my second novel for the Open Door series and it’s adapted from one of the short stories in the Connections collection. It’s a stand alone story so the reader doesn’t have to have read Connections, but it does mean that someone who reads Three’s A Crowd can discuss it with anyone who has read Jennifer’s story in Connections.

Jennifer has booked her special day through Weddings in Paradise. It is to be a very romantic marriage, taking place on a white sandy beach under a blue sku.

Jennifer has her perfect dress and Harry, her perfect man. This will be the best wedding ever. She is the luckiest girl in the world. That is, until her future mother-in-law turns up.
